A Spitfire Drone Survey client specializing in high quality design and construction requested monthly terrain models for a 40-hectare construction site located on the steep terrain of Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver. The primary goal was to capture data of the site at monthly intervals using a remotely piloted aerial system photogrammetric technique.
For this project, we used drone-based photogrammetric scanning to provide the client with rapid insights on their project.
To ensure accuracy of the RPAS acquired data, a network of ground control targets was established at locations of high visibility outside of the dynamic construction area. These control targets were referenced in each dataset and measured to calculate any horizontal or vertical error in the generated terrain. Temporary ground control was also placed throughout the site using a survey grade GPS to supplement the established control network.
The monthly data collected was used to track the progress of the site and for calculating material volumes for accurate progress billings.The data was also uploaded into an easy-to-use web-based platform for clients to view, measure and calculate volumes.

Using our product from the data processing, we generate deliverables catering to our clients’ individual needs, including digital terrain models, grading plans, earthworks reports, monitoring reports, various point cloud classifications, 3D design overlay and integration of high precision total station/survey grade GPS measurements with aerial survey data.
